Woy Woy Pedestrian Undepass

Planned to the minute

One of Civilbuild’s projects that had to be completed within a limited time frame and required planning to the minute is a pedestrian underpass under the main northern rail line at Woy Woy.

The project, which has just been completed, was led by engineer David Tolmie and involved the installation of a 165 tonne precast tunnel section.

“We installed the tunnel in a 48 hour rail shutdown, working non-stop over the weekend with three shifts of up to 20 men,” David said.

“During the shutdown we cut and removed the tracks, excavated 980 tonnes of material using four excavators, installed the tunnel using two 500 tonne cranes and backfilled and reinstated the rail lines ready for operation on Monday morning.”
